Abstract
Efficient reproductive management is essential for the sustainability and profitability of cattle operations. Artificial insemination (AI) and pregnancy diagnosis are critical tools for improving herd genetics, optimizing breeding programs, and making informed herd management decisions. However, limited access to large-animal veterinarians and the high cost of professional services pose significant challenges to producers. To address this gap, the Southwest Cattle Artificial Insemination and Pregnancy Diagnosis Program was developed to provide hands-on training for cattle producers, ranch personnel, and students seeking expertise in reproductive technologies.
The program featured two specialized workshops: a two-day AI training and a 2.5-day pregnancy diagnosis course. These sessions combined foundational knowledge with extensive hands-on experience, allowing participants to develop practical skills in AI techniques, reproductive health assessment, and pregnancy classification. Participants worked with live cattle under the guidance of industry experts and Extension specialist, gaining confidence in implementing these practices within their own operations. Additionally, ultrasound demonstrations provided insight into advanced diagnostic methods.
The program has demonstrated significant impact, with a majority of participants indicating a strong likelihood of adopting AI (91%) and pregnancy diagnosis (94%) in their operations. Over 89% of attendees reported acquiring skills that would directly enhance efficiency, profitability, and overall herd management. The initiative not only empowers producers to take greater control of their breeding programs but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of the cattle industry.
This collaborative effort, led by county Extension agents and specialists from New Mexico State University, was further supported by industry partners who provided educational resources and sponsorships. Moving forward, this program aims to expand its reach, ensuring more producers have access to the knowledge and tools needed to enhance herd productivity and economic viability.
