Abstract
Livestock Extension faculty use needs assessments and evaluations to understand Florida cattle producers' needs and measure teaching effectiveness. With traditional extension methods (e.g., classroom-style presentations and field days) facing challenges in attendance, our group developed the Top Rancher Challenge - a “threefold” tool to engage, spark interest, and identify knowledge gaps in cattle production systems. The quiz-style tool capitalizes on competitive human nature, enticing participants to learn more about practical topics in livestock and forage production. The objectives are to 1) capture existing knowledge (program efficacy), 2) increase knowledge (teaching tool), and 3) assess educational needs (needs assessment). Presented annually at the Florida Cattlemen’s Convention & Tradeshow, the Challenge targets both adults and youth separately. Participants answer 15-20 multiple choice questions based on Extension materials and programming on an iPad at the Extension booth. Winners receive the title of Top Rancher/Top Youth Rancher of the year and a prize. Afterward, correct answers and references are shared with participants to encourage further learning. Since launching in 2022, participation has increased by 84%, from 179 to 329 participants in 2024. Knowledge change is assessed by analyzing responses on repeated topics. Additionally, a follow-up survey gauges what participants learned specifically and if they implemented changes in their operations. Results show 20% knowledge increase on cattle reproduction, 11% on pasture fertility, and 56% on herd health among adults. Youth participants showed a 31% knowledge gain in equipment safety and 46% in forage management. However, there was no knowledge gain in weed control and nutrition, highlighting opportunities for further education. Of 443 survey responses, 10% (n=45) shared how they benefited from the Challenge, reporting a perceived knowledge gain of 52%. After receiving the correct answers and references, 80% expressed interest in learning more about each topic. As a result of increased knowledge and inquisitiveness, 20% indicated they implemented changes in their operations, such as rotational grazing and improving their nutrition program. The Top Rancher Challenge is an example of how to gather feedback from clientele at a professional conference interactively. This threefold tool effectively educates producers while revealing the efficacy and opportunities for Extension programs.
