Abstract
The New & Reassigned Agriculture Agent Training (NRAAT) offered by UT Extension is a component of the onboarding process and designed to equip newly hired Extension professionals with the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed for success in their roles. This intensive training covers a broad spectrum of agricultural topics over the course of 3 years, rotating across the state in each of the three grand divisions, ensuring that agents are well-prepared to serve their communities effectively. NRAAT provides hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that allow participants to engage directly with essential agricultural practices. Training sessions focus on key areas for each of the three grand divisions of Tennessee such as crop production, livestock management, pest control, and sustainable farming practices. Additionally, agents gain insights into farm business management, risk assessment, and the latest research-based recommendations to support Tennessee’s diverse agricultural industry. Through interactive demonstrations with specialists, farm visits, and field exercises at one of our numerous AgResearch and Education Centers, new agents develop the confidence to address real-world challenges faced by producers and stakeholders.
Though focused on technical knowledge, NRAAT incorporates soft skills training such as communication, outreach strategies, and program development to enhance an agent’s ability to engage with local farmers, agribusinesses, and community partners.
Collaboration and connection are a cornerstone of NRAAT, fostering networking opportunities, such as a Trivia Night, between new agents, experienced mentors, and specialists from UT Institute of Agriculture. These relationships provide ongoing support and professional growth opportunities beyond the initial training. Additionally, the program incorporates problem-solving exercises to simulate real-life scenarios that agents may encounter in the field.
By the end of NRAAT, participants are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make an immediate impact in their respective counties. The training lays a strong foundation for their careers in Extension, ensuring they can effectively bridge the gap between agricultural research and on-the-ground application. As Tennessee’s agricultural landscape evolves, NRAAT continues to adapt, integrating emerging topics and innovative technologies to best serve farmers and rural communities across the state.
