Abstract

Situation.  The Villages, the largest retirement community in the country, continues to grow exponentially.  While the largest portion of The Villages is located in Sumter County, FL, both Marion and Lake Counties also have The Villages expanding in their counties.   The newest district of The Villages has almost doubled in size and has become home to the newest residents. Most of the residents who are from other states or countries coming from areas with which may have different practices related to water conservation.  Methods.  WISER Lawns and Landscapes for New Residents, a program which promotes protection and conservation of water resources is offered is offered monthly at two locations. Residents discover sound practices for efficiently watering lawns and landscapes, implementing integrated pest management, and following proper fertilization practices.  practices can adversely affect water resources.  Residents learn through this workshop how to conserve and protect water resources.   Results.  Participants responded to a Qualtrics survey n=99) which documented a change in behavior resulting in potential water savings and other practices which may lead to protection of water resources.  As a result of participant changes in water-saving practices (n=99), they demonstrated an estimated water savings of 5,137,858 gallons of water which represents a water savings value of $17,725 based on $3.45 per 1,000 gallons.  Responding residents changed behavior related to pesticide use including identifying a pest before spraying 39% (n=28), reading and following the label before applying the product 49% (n=35), chose the least toxic pest control at 45% (n=32), and match the correct pesticide for the pest 45% (n=32). As a result of fertilizer changes, participants 52% (n=38) minimize fertilization in the winter months, and some use a slow or controlled release fertilizer on landscape plants 37%(n=27).  Conclusion. New residents who responded to the survey have indicated by changed behavior that resulted in significant changes that conserved and protected Florida’s water resources..
