Abstract

The Division of Extension University of Wisconsin-Madison Farm Pulse program lacked an online curriculum on crop insurance and grain marketing decision making. A new pilot program curriculum was developed by adapting and updating former University of Wisconsin-Extension AgVentures materials. A North Central Extension Risk Management Education grant was secured to assist in creation and development of new materials. The purpose of this curriculum was to increase learner knowledge in crop insurance and grain marketing through a hybrid course of in-person and online educational programs. The online course was offered through Canvas while in-person meetings were held statewide at three locations. Course objectives were to help participants establish economic fundamentals of grain production, risk management, and development of a grain marketing plan. Participants were to understand and apply risk management tools and cost of production analysis to determine break even prices. Applying fundamental and technical analysis to achieve marketing plan goals was reinforced through a grain marketing game to simulate price and crop production risk. Topic areas addressed in the course included risk management, crop insurance, and grain marketing techniques. The course provided guidance with identifying production and marketing risks to assist with grain marketing decisions. A series of videos were created to enhance the learning from the Canvas Course and in-person workshops. Over 155 participant views were recorded during course. Evaluation data collected from participants who completed the full curriculum in northwest Wisconsin indicated 83% of responses agreed or strongly agreed that learning or use of information increased. Plans include adding content for organic farms, women, and underserved audiences.
