Abstract
Starting in 2022, the creation of a seed library in the Holbrook Navajo County Cooperative Extension office blossomed over time to a community of gardeners, community workers and seed enthusiasts. Two years later, another cooperative extension office seed library and three partner libraries joined the program. The seed libraries are all located in Apache and Navajo counties, which hold some of the most rural areas in Arizona, and are also home to the Hopi, Dine', Zuni and White Mountain Apache. Fresh fruits and vegetables can be difficult or expensive to obtain, and the cost to travel to towns that provide affordable groceries can exceed two hours for many residents. Providing no cost and high quality open pollinated seeds to the community to improve access to fresh produce is slowly showing an increase in resident self-sufficiency, seed saving and confidence in growing vegetables in backyards and other garden areas.
