Abstract

This project aimed to adress knowledge gaps in herd health and management among small swine producers and veterinarians in the U.S. Small-scale swine farms face unique challenges, such as limited veterinary support, economic pressures, and a lack of accessible resources, which affect animal welfare and farm sustainability. The project, led by a multi-state team of experts, will identify key knowledge gaps through surveys and focus groups with producers and veterinarians. Based on these findings, the team will develop practical, accessible educational materials, including written guides, podcasts, and short videos on topics like biosecurity, nutrition, parasite management, and housing. The survey results highlight common health concerns among producers, such as respiratory and reproductive issues, as well as a need for improved veterinary care and biosecurity practices. Veterinarians identified gaps in training on nutrition, parasite management, and environmental control. The educational materials created will focus on bridging these gaps with user-friendly content that can be easily applied by small-scale producers. The goal of the project is to enhance herd health management practices, promote sustainable farming methods, and improve consumer confidence in U.S. pork production. By providing targeted educational resources, this project aims to empower small producers to address the challenges they face and contribute to the long-term success of the industry.
