Abstract

Proper utilization and conservation of water resources has a significant impact on the sustainability and profitability of Georgia agriculture. Numerous water educational programs reach across South Georgia along the coastal plain region of the state. Farmer educational opportunities like the use of soil moisture sensors, gives farmers concise data to determine timely irrigation scheduling applications to supplement rainfall events. Multiple soil moisture sensors options are accessible to farmers to gain familiarity and acceptance. The use of irrigation apps and crop water use curves are other available educational tools. Conducting pivot uniformity tests is a simple but highly effective means to increase efficiency with providing both water and energy savings. Educational efforts like field days, tours, county production meetings, and workshops provide outlets to share technology with farmers. Educational tools such as the rainfall simulator show the importance of cover crops to increase water infiltration while the Enviroscape teaches students about the water cycle, water conservation and the impacts of pollution and runoff. The Master Irrigator Program is an example of one area of focus providing learning through classroom, in-field training, and multiple interactions during the growing season. Water related county programming efforts and applied research projects impact local farmers and often reach across the state and region. Multifaceted programs help create a localized approach providing learning opportunities all within reach through the local county extension office.
