Abstract
This on-farm research trial evaluated two nitrogen application methods to corn: coulters and Y-drops. Corn seeding rate was 31,000 seeds per acre. A total of 45 gallons of 28% nitrogen was applied using each application method and replicated four times in this 10-acre field. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether either method resulted in an increase in corn yield.
The corn was planted on May 17th and grew well, with little evidence of insect or disease pressure. While planted timely, this site received less than 1.5 inches of rain near the time of pollination and resulted in lower-than-expected yields. The results of this study did not show a statistically significant difference in final yield. Fisher’s Protected Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at alpha = 0.1 calculated an LSD of 11.98 and a Coefficient of Variation (CV) of 3.68%. Additional research over multiple years and various growing conditions is needed to further evaluate these nitrogen application methods.
