Abstract

On September 27, Hurricane Helene traveled more than 500 miles inland, devastating many parts of the Southeast but especially Western North Carolina.  Many people lost not only their homes, farms but unfortunately lives as well.  In an effort to bring some sort of normalcy to a chaotic holiday season, Asheville Cotton, a local quilting shop, put out a call for individuals to make stockings to spread cheer.

At around the same time, Chris Heintze, Piedmont District Director, asked if we had any ideas for a service project for the upcoming December District Inservice Training.  It seemed like a natural fit, making stockings for those in Western North Carolina would be a fantastic opportunity for service for our district but at the same time would be a fun activity for the staff in the district to possibly learn a new skill.

Initially, this was tested with Extension Staff as a means for a Community Service Project.  Stations were created so all staff could be involved in the process.  Staff was able to learn measuring, cutting, pinning, machine sewing, hand sewing and construction skills.  This program could be easily duplicated with other adult or youth audiences.

In just a short time, Extension staff were able to make more than 24 stockings.  Stockings were delivered to WNC along with a small Christmas Tree.  3D printed ornaments and toy fidget trees were also provided with each stocking.

In conclusion, we would love to help train agents and help give them the skills necessary to duplicate this community service project for future disaster-stricken areas, nursing homes, or possibly hospitals.
