Abstract
The poster chronicles the development of a two years series of educational events coordinated with both local and Federal agencies in the Root River Watershed. The series of topics was developed for local graziers after a focus group provided input. The Pasture Walk series included both classroom sessions and field locations. The goal of this education is to keep livestock grazing a viable option in Southeast Minnesota. The region's unusual karst geology presents unique problems in water quality. The theory: If livestock production is profitable there will be more livestock on the land, and there will be more grass and legumes raised for both grazing and hay production. This in turn will protect the soil from increased erosion, helping to improve water quality, and preserve the environment. The hands-ons educational sessions included plant ID demostration plots, managing grazing systems, a fencing demonstration, water system installation, and grass-fed beef marketing seminar. After a second focus group met in the fall of 2009,the series will continue in 2010.
