Abstract

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) animal feed safety division requires feed mills and elevator firms to develop and maintain documentation on the firm’s current good manufacturing practices for processing and retail animal feed.

My objective with FSMA is to provide an affordable service to small firms, which helps sustain healthy communities, while adding tax dollars to local and state economies. In 2017, I became certified as a Preventive Control Qualified Individual and created a plan manual template which includes a feed safety plan modifiable for each firm’s unique manufacturing practices.  These manuals also contain firm specific documentation and forms that firms use to record trainings and compliance with FSMA guidelines.  I provide routine consultations to help firms document changes in firm operations or interpretations of FSMA regulations by state agricultural feed inspectors.

In 2021, the Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority released a study of Missouri’s agriculture and forestry industries, and the impact these industries added to the state’s economy. This study reported that the animal and pet food processing sector contributed $3.8 billion to Missouri’s economy and accounted for 37,078 jobs in the state. From 2017 to current time, a total of 4,063,526 tons of livestock feed and pet food were manufactured by 40 firms that I consulted. This tonnage has resulted in a total economic impact of $1,959,608,968 added to Missouri’s economy.
