Abstract
ISU Extension and Outreach Cerro Gordo County is dedicated to empowering all youth, including those with disabilities. To expand opportunities for everyone, the Show Stock Buddies program was introduced in Cerro Gordo County. This initiative, a collaboration between 4-H/FFA and the Iowa Special Olympics, offers a safe, noncompetitive environment for youth with disabilities to participate in livestock showing. The program pairs "buddies" (youth with disabilities aged 10 or older) with "mentors" (4-H teen and FFA members) to assist them during educational workshops and exhibitions. The program addresses the need for more opportunities for youth with disabilities. Through livestock showing, participants developed responsibility, teamwork, work ethic, and animal care skills. They also enhanced their communication abilities by discussing their animals with families, judges, and the public. Teamwork was developed by participants working with their animals and families. To prepare for the final show at the North Iowa Fair, a practice show was held at Central Gardens of North Iowa during a Fresh on Friday’s event. This allowed participants to practice showing their animals and answering questions from a judge and the public. The final show was the culmination of their efforts and hard work. The program is organized by ISU Extension and Outreach Rising Star interns of Worth and Cerro Gordo counties, along with county extension staff. It is sponsored by the David and Phyllis Murphy Charitable Foundation, Iowa 4-H Foundation, and the Hanson Family Foundation, whose generous contributions made the orientation, workshops, practice show, and fair event possible.
