Abstract
The Lunch and Learn Program is an ongoing horticultural education initiative in Roane County, developed in collaboration with the Master Gardeners of Roane County (MGRC). This program aims to provide free, research-based learning opportunities to individuals of all ages and experience levels. The primary objective is to enhance public knowledge of sustainable gardening practices, environmental stewardship, and innovative horticultural techniques through expert-led presentations, hands-on demonstrations, and interactive discussions.
The program employs a multimodal learning approach, offering in-person attendance at the Roane County Extension Office, as well as live streaming via Zoom, Facebook, and YouTube to increase accessibility. Educational topics are tailored to seasonal gardening needs and community interests, with popular sessions including dehydrating produce, raised bed gardening, and guided garden tours. Post-session surveys and participant feedback are used to refine and expand programming, ensuring continued relevance.
In 2024, the Lunch and Learn Program reached over 2,200 participants across various media platforms. Impact assessments revealed that 100% of respondents gained new insights into environmental stewardship and sustainable gardening practices, while 80% reported improved plant selection knowledge. Additionally, over 90% of attendees rated the program as highly relevant and beneficial. Emerging topics of interest, such as winter sowing, landscape design, and growing grapes, have been identified for future sessions, demonstrating an engaged and evolving audience.
Moving forward, the program will expand its educational offerings, enhance hands-on learning opportunities, and strengthen community outreach through strategic partnerships and digital content development. The success of this initiative highlights the critical role of Extension education in fostering informed, environmentally conscious gardening communities. By adapting to participant needs and advancing horticultural knowledge, the Lunch and Learn Program will continue to serve as a leading educational resource in Roane County.
