Abstract
Ohio State University Extension and Soil and Water Conservation District staff in Putnam County, Ohio began a monthly series of educational programs for local women in 2023 which continues today. The program series Women for the Land (WFL) uses the learning circle model to encourage participant engagement and knowledge application via interactive educational sessions, hands-on workshops, and field trips. WFL is designed to 1.) bring women with differing backgrounds together to learn about agriculture and natural resource topics, 2.) provide a welcoming, inclusive environment where participants openly share and learn from one another, 3.) provide resources, tools, and assistance to inform participants on agriculture and natural resources topics, and 4.) maintain engagement with and among women learners through a community network. One or more staff members facilitate each WFL session. Sessions focus on a topic that provides practical skills, ecological awareness, and/or economic issues. Past topics have included: women in agriculture, mental health, land leasing, pollinators and pollinator habitats, gardening, forestry, soils, native and invasive plants, wildlife, birding, and water quality. Program evaluations have provided insight into program improvements, changing formats, and efficient use of local resources. Changes in participant knowledge and implementation of information learned highlight the positive impact of WFL as a well-rounded learning experience for local women. Overall, WFL has been a valuable initiative to promote agriculture and natural resource stewardship among Ohio women in Putnam County.
