Abstract

The Montgomery County OSU Extension Office was approached in the winter of 2023 by a farmer who is also a first responder in the county and he asked for more agricultural safety programming in the county due to an increased occurance of some agricultural emergencies in the county. There were two needs decided: grain bin safety
and animal transportation handling in an accident. The goal was for 2024 and 2025 was to provide these trainings to the county. With scheduling it was decided to start with grain bin safety. The first step was identifying our planning fire department: Jefferson Township Fire who shared an office space with the Ohio State University Extension, Montgomery County. We then needed at least three total departments to receive the training. We easily reached more than that being in a larger county setting with 23 fire departments with numerous stations. Community partnership blossomed with numerous sponsorships as well as attendance from the stations and some area farmers. The county commissioners also acknowledged this program and provided proclamations to the sponsors and the departments. Participants in this event had to later utlilize the training in December in a grain bin emergency.
