Abstract
Whether driven by a desire to understand the natural world or to forage, the demand for accurate and science-based information on wild mushrooms has remained strong in recent years. Currently, resources provided by Extension on this subject are limited compared to other subject areas. Therefore, a need was identified for building more comprehensive, scientifically-backed resources for those interested in learning more about wild mushrooms, including landowners, foragers, gardeners, and nature enthusiasts. To address this gap, educational opportunities focusing on wild mushrooms and macrofungi in Ohio were developed from 2017 to 2025. These opportunities, held in 23 counties across Ohio, included in-person lectures, seminars, webinars, and classroom-based workshops with hands-on specimen identification. Additionally, fungal forays—coordinated outdoor classes allowing participants to collect and identify their own mushrooms—were held when weather permitted. Presentations and activities were also integrated into existing programs, including Master Gardener Volunteers and Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist trainings and continuing education through webinars and workshops. Participants not only learned to identify mushrooms but also about the ecology and roles fungi play in our ecosystems. These educational sessions were offered by county Extension offices or hosted by 19 partnering agencies or organizations. Feedback indicated a desire to see more mushrooms included, with initial evaluations showing interest in learning about species beyond the handful of common edible fungi. To date, 2,104 people have participated in these events, with more events planned for the future that will dive deeper into the world of fungi.
