Abstract
The Alabama Extension Home Horticulture Team recognized a growing public interest in sustainable and innovative gardening practices, particularly hydroponics. Historically, hydroponic education within Alabama Extension had been limited, with only one webinar session offered in 2021. However, survey assessments from online and in-person workshops indicated a strong demand for more comprehensive hydroponic education.
To address this need, the team participated in an immersive two-day training with UF/IFAS Extension in March 2024. This hands-on experience provided Extension agents with the knowledge and skills to develop tailored hydroponic workshops for Alabama residents. In 2024, three full-day, in-person Hydroponic Systems for Home Gardeners and Educators workshops were launched across the state, targeting these groups as well as small-scale farmers. These workshops introduced participants to various hydroponic systems, including Dutch bucket, deep water culture, Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), and Vertical Hydroponic Towers. Team members constructed and documented these systems, integrating visual and hands on demonstrations into workshop presentations.
Workshop activities included detailed discussions on hydroponic principles, fertilization, water quality, lighting, plant selection, seed-starting, media selection, and harvesting techniques. A hands-on component allowed each participant to construct and take home a deep-water culture system, fostering practical application and confidence.
-
Prior to training, 28% had no knowledge of hydroponics; post-training, 96% reported at least moderate knowledge, with 56% reaching high competency levels.
-
Knowledge of NFT and Floating System Technology increased significantly, with 85% and 91% of participants, respectively, achieving moderate to expert proficiency.
The success of these workshops demonstrates the effectiveness of hands-on hydroponic education in increasing public knowledge and adoption. Alabama Extension’s initiative has empowered participants with the confidence and resources to integrate hydroponic practices into their homes, classrooms, and small farms, contributing to a more sustainable and innovative gardening culture in the state.
