Abstract

The SDSU Extension Crop Hour Webinar series was created to provide current, research-based crop system updates and information to agriculture producers and agri-business professionals throughout the state of South Dakota.  The series also worked to continue the advancement of local agriculture production during a challenging and socially distant time. The webinar took place every Tuesday through Friday from 10:00-11:00am CT from January 4 to March 26, 2021. Our team accomplished this by identifying common crop production issues and interests, combining them into weekly topics, identifying a host for each week, and organizing speakers for each day of the webinar series. A total of 10 weekly topics and 40 sessions were completed by March 15, 2021. In order to mimic face-to-face interaction, we opened-up an informal discussion following each daily webinar. This allowed attendees to interact and ask additional questions to hosts and speakers. State-wide advertising efforts were made that included: weekly SDSU Extension radio updates and news releases; as well as paid radio, social media, print, and email ads; partner organizations also assisted in promoting the event. As of March 5, 2021, we have hosted 1,782 participants from 15 different countries over the course of 36 sessions. Following each presentation, participants were asked if they learned something useful from the webinar using Zoom polling. On average, 21.3% said “yes a great deal,” 42.6% said “yes quite a bit,” and 34.7% said “yes a little.”  Additionally, 35.5% said that they are “very likely” to share the information they learned, with 40.2% saying they were “moderately likely” to share, and 21.7% said they were a “little likely” to share what they had learned. The program providing timely, agronomy-based information, creating an improved understanding of best management practices among our audience consisting of famers and agri-business professionals. In addition, the virtual platform allowed more information to be disseminated to a larger audience than ever reached by regional crop clinic meetings. The program was considered a great success by SDSU Extension staff and will impact meeting planning and format of delivery in the coming years.
