Abstract
Henderson County Horticulture agent worked with Master Gardener Volunteers to acquire a $7500 Community Foundation grant to improve and expand the Bountiful Harvest Community Garden. Volunteers worked to double deck 35 beds and fill these with 45 yards of soil and spread an additional 10 yards of soil around garden to level and build-up the ground. 5 new beds were built to increase the total to 40 beds. Volunteers painted, stacked and filled 120+ concrete blocks to establish a front wall to divert flood water and installed metal sheeting around side and back fence to help divert flood waters away from the garden. We cleared and leveled areas with 15 yards of soil, covered with layers of cardboard and 6'' of wood chips. Laid 30 plus yards of wood chips which prevents weeds from growing and acts as a sponge during heavy rains. The garden was expanded and the garden proved more secure from flooding during the fall tropical storms after project renovation.
